Inventory Space
Inventory is arranged in Item Slots, provided by your backpack, belt, or any other kind of storage available.
Backpack
A backpack is your primary means of carrying around items that you don’t need to get to quickly. Your backpack has a number of slots equal to 10 + your Strength modifier.
Retrieving an item from your backpack always takes an action.
Belt
Your belt represents your ability to carry items that you can quickly gain access to during combat. It may be as simple as a waist belt or it could represent a series of sheaths, bandoliers and pouches. Items kept on your belt may be retrieved or stored as if you were drawing a weapon (1 item per turn as part of the action to use it. Drawing a weapon counts as part of this limit).
Any Medium or Small items stored on your belt will use up 1 slot regardless of its size. You may also store a number of large items equal to 1 + Strength Modifier using only 1 slot. Additional large items will use up their normally-required slots.
A slot holding a ranged weapon can also hold one full quiver (or equivalent) of ammunition for the weapon. Likewise a slot holding a spellcasting focus can also hold a component pouch.
The total number of slots your belt has is determined by your character size—the bigger you are, the more space you have to store items.
- Small characters start with 7 slots
- Medium characters start with 8 slots.
- Large characters start with 9 slots.
Armor
The armor you wear also affects the number of slots you can have on your belt. Armor is bulky and restricting—the bigger it is, the less space you have for items.
Armor | Belt Slots |
---|---|
None | +0 |
Light | -1 |
Medium | -2 |
Heavy | -3 |
Free Storage
In addition to their backpack and belt, characters can freely carry one ration box, one waterskin, and one purse. These don’t occupy inventory space, and can store a small amount of basic supplies.
- Ration box: Stores up to five basic rations
- Waterskin: Holds enough water for five drinks.
- Purse: Holds 100 coins
- Bedroll: Holds 1 Bedroll
- Component Pouch
Worn Items
Worn items such as necklaces, boots, or cloaks do not take up a belt slot unless that item requires the use your hands or any type of action to activate. Worn items for which you are currently attuned also do not take up belt slots unless their base item type would do so.
Examples:
- Attuned magic weapons – Not a worn item, takes up a belt slots.
- Potions – Not a worn item, takes up a belt slots.
- Cloak of Invisibility – Requires attunement, does not use belt slot.
- Boots of Elvenkind – No action to activate, does not use a belt slot.
- Arcane Focus – Requires hands to use, takes up a belt slot.
Accessory Slots
The crafting system allows for special clothes and jewelry to be made. These are special types of items called accessories. All characters have 2 accessory slots which may be used exclusively for player crafted jewelry or clothing. Magical items do not use accessory slots even if they fall into the clothing or jewelry category. You may only change the accessories you are benefiting from over the course of a long rest.
Item Size
Item size is measured in terms of slots—this tells you how much space the item will occupy in your inventory. Most items can be grouped into four major categories of size: tiny, small, medium, and large.
Sizes | Slots | Description |
---|---|---|
Tiny | 1/5 | Very small (smaller than a hand); Can hold many in one hand. |
Small | 1 | Short length (up to a handspan / 9 inches); Held comfortably with one hand. |
Medium | 2 | Medium length (up to an arms-length / 2ft); Held with one hand. |
Large | 3 | Long length (longer than an arm); Requires one or two hands to hold. |
When categorizing an item, consider the overall size of it against the average person—don’t worry too much about weight, unless there’s a very good reason to.
Stacking Items
You can store 5 tiny items, 5 gemstones, or 100 coins in a single slot.
Extra-Large Items
Some items may be considered extra-large. A big water barrel, a giant’s sword, a stone boulder. For these items, use a multiple of 3 slots—6, 9, 12, etc.
Magical Containers
Some containers have magical or otherwise enhanced properties that change their capacity:
Bag of Holding: Counts as a Large item and has 50 slots. Retrieving an item takes a full minute.
Heward’s Handy Haversack: Can replace your backpack and has 25 slots regardless of your strength. Retrieving an item only takes 1 action.
Portable Hole: Counts as a Small item and has 75 slots. Retrieving an item takes a full minute.
